Samotné vydavatelství vzniklo pod záštitou hospice stejného názvu tedy Cesta domů. Hlavním cílem a poslání je snaha změnit situaci starých a nemocných, umírajících v naší zemi. Jednou z činností, jak toho dosáhnout je osvěta, pořádání přednášek pro pracovníky hospiců, ale i pro obyčejné lidi, studenty i menší děti. I tomu se lidé z Cesty domů věnují. Jejich snaha o zvýšení informovanosti vyústila ve vydávání knih, které se zaměřují jak na lékaře a odborníky, ale i pro pozůstalé nebo nejmenší děti.
Vedle knih vydávají i informační letáky pro pacienty a jejich rodiny, plakáty, pozvánky na tematické akce nebo kalendáře. Výtěžek z prodeje jde na podporu chodu celé společnosti. Za deset let fungování vydali přes padesát knih a brožur. Protože jsou knihy často určeny pro ty nejmenší, ale i pro ty největší, bývají doplněny ilustracemi, takže je vidět, že si s nimi dal grafik záležet. V této oblasti vydavatelství spolupracuje se studiem DESIGNIQ a výsledek opravdu stojí za to. Největší úspěch na poli dětských knih měl překlad knihy Když dinosaurům někdo umře. Z odborné literatury pak knihy Zdeňka Kalvacha Manuál paliativní péče o umírající pacienty a Hospic do kapsy. Už na přednášce mě oslovila kniha Malé dobré zprávy. Podle anotace jde o soubor příběhů lidí z hospiců, které jsou jejich posledními, ale mají nám připomenout důležitost maličkostí běžného života. Druhou publikací, která mě zaujala je kniha Anna a Anička. Mezigenerační příběh babičky a vnučky vypráví o vztahu a ztrátě té nejbližší. Je bohatě ilustrovaná, takže si v ní mohou listovat jak děti, tak rodiče.
A ano, je to těžké téma, před kterým se schováváme, vyhýbáme se mu, nejsme zvyklí o něm mluvit, vyvolává v nás smutek a žene slzy do očí, ale ignorací se smrti nezbavíme. Možná když si o ní něco přečteme, bude snazší se s ní smířit. Nebo si alespoň uvědomit, že je přirozená.
